Auctioneers Notes: An excellent opportunity to purchase a country property with a large 3360 sq. ft. sandstone dwelling constructed in 1766.  Property has tremendous history as a General Store and residence, being in the political Wallace family for over 200 years.  House has many recent updates including a remodeled kitchen with new cabinets & granite countertops, as well as the dining room and bathroom.  Historical house with wide plank floors (some refinished), solid wood doors, stone walls and other original features allow the buyer to renovate remaining rooms to it’s previous charm.

Story & History behind this property

The property at 4452 Division Highway is alive with fascinating history. Constructed in 1766, a decade before the Declaration of Independence was signed, this attractive stone residence, which once served as a general store for nearly a century, also entertained the likes of several high- ranking folks within the political arena. William Wallace, who for many years served as President Abraham Lincoln’s personal physician, both in the White House and reportedly prior to Lincoln’s presidency, was raised in this house. Wallace also went on to help establish the West Reading hospital.

The historic residence, which also served as a general store and meeting place for various politically involved friends of William Wallace, is spacious and contains a host of rooms. During the Wallace family’s ownership of the property, the town which the property is located at was referred to as Wallacetown. Clearly, the Wallace family, as merchants with access to influential political figures of the day, played an essential role in the town’s early development. Since 1833, the town has been renamed Blue Ball.

William’s father Robert was a successful merchant and operated his general store for many years on this property. Remaining in the Wallace family’s possession for the duration of two hundred years, the property was sold in 1966. Several decades later, the residence was sold once again, with the current owner, John Martin, having purchased the property in 2009. At the point of Mr. Martin’s acquisition of the property, the residential structure was in a state of neglect and required repairs. An extent of renovations was conducted by him.

The residence currently consists of five bedrooms and one bath. A new propane furnace has been added and the plumbing has been updated. The metal roof is tight; part of it was replaced within the past two years. A large fireplace, which once served as a cooking fireplace, is located within one of the rooms.

Mr. Martin, the current owner of the property, has lived at this residence for the past seven years. “The kitchen is completely remodeled,” he said. “We also did a few other restorations. During the restoration projects, we tried to retain the old look of the house as much as possible. The hardwood flooring which had been installed was re-milled and reused.”

If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind residential structure with a storied list of early political figures who stepped foot on the property during the two hundred years that the residence/general store was owned by the Wallace family, this might be the perfect setting for you. A portion of the residence, which has not yet undergone recent renovation/restoration work, will require cosmetic attention in order to enhance the living conditions.
